The Fondazione per Leggere acts in close collaboration with the municipalities and municipal libraries of the Milan area, to facilitate and support the promotion of reading. This is done by organising activities and initiatives in the area, involving schools, associations and organisations.
The Fondazione per Leggere coordinates 62 libraries, belonging to 57 municipalities, with 210 librarians. In addition to the development and coordination of reading promotion activities, it also ensures the centralised cataloguing service according to international, national and local reference standards; organises and manages the interlibrary loan service, the central depository library and the union catalogue; manages the library system website, the library information network and the Internet browsing service; provides and maintains the management software and other tools made available to the libraries; and supports the professional training of its staff.
